Why is Lunar New Year important?
Lunar New Year (Tuesday, 17th February 2026) represents one of the most important cultural events celebrated each year. It serves as a prompt to reset by clearing away the old to make way for the new. It reminds us to cherish the legacy of those who came before us and share their stories with the young ones. It reconnects us with family, because the Lunar New Year was historically the one day when all relatives and siblings would return from afar to dine together. It rekindles our ties with our immediate community, as people visit their neighbours to wish them a great year ahead. It revitalises the energy in the village as various groups make an effort to host events.
Our theme for this year’s celebration
2026 is the year of the horse, and so AustrAsia has chosen the following theme for this year’s Lunar New Year celebration: ‘The Dragon-Horse spirit thrives; success when the Horse arrives’ (龍馬精神、馬到成功).
‘The Dragon-Horse spirit thrives’ - 2026 is the year to tap into our inner horse, an indomitable will that gallops forward tirelessly and valiantly. We can draw upon this energy through honesty, sincerity, and learning from the wisdom ingrained in our cultures.
‘Success when the Horse arrives’ - this is also the year where you are certain to see the fruits of your labour when your efforts are imbued with the Dragon-Horse spirit. The key to practising this is self-discipline, perseverance, moral strength, and taking the first step.
The theme suggests that the two horses - one representing our inner self and the other representing our outer self - must work together in harmony to create vitality and build momentum.
