Art of Knots
Art of Knots
Art of Knots is a new cultural experience program at AustrAsia Cultural Centre centred on the traditional art of knotting. For generations, knots have been used not only for practical purposes, but also as forms of decoration, craftsmanship and cultural expression. Different shapes, patterns and arrangements can carry ideas of connection, harmony, continuity and good wishes.
At AustrAsia Cultural Centre, we want to make this culturally-rooted tradition easy to experience through hands-on learning. You can start with a simple knot, understand how it is formed, and gradually discover the cultural meaning behind the craft.
Learning through your hands
Knotting is best understood by doing.
You’ll begin with basic techniques and learn how a series of simple movements can gradually form a balanced and decorative pattern. As your confidence grows, you can move into more detailed forms and explore how different knots can be adapted into ornaments, accessories and decorative pieces. Our activity is designed to give you something you can make with your own hands and take home.
More than a craft
Traditional knotting carries meaning.
The idea of a knot naturally speaks to connection. A continuous cord can be folded, crossed and brought together without losing its wholeness. Over time, different knot forms have also become associated with ideas such as harmony, good fortune, continuity and togetherness.
We keep this cultural background approachable. You do not need to study symbolism before you begin. Instead, learning a traditional art at AustrAsia does not mean simply reproducing something from the past.
It is about understanding the cultural meaning behind it and finding ways for that tradition to remain part of everyday life. A traditional knot can become a small decoration, a handmade gift or simply something enjoyable to make.
What will the sessions be like?
Art of Knots will include different ways to take part.
Some sessions will be short and simple, making them easy for beginners, families and younger participants to try. Other sessions will give you more time to work on detailed knots and develop your technique. All materials will be provided for scheduled learning activities. No previous knotting or craft experience is needed.
Art of knots this Spring
This spring, you’ll be able to experience traditional knotting through both regular learning activities and selected family cultural experiences.
We hope it offers a simple way to slow down, work with your hands and discover the culture carried within an art that has been passed from one generation to the next.
