Oriental Ink Art is more than painting with a brush and ink. Shaped through centuries of cultural and artistic development, it has evolved into a distinctive visual language for observing nature, understanding form, using space, creating rhythm and expressing artistic mood.
The Oriental Ink Art Learning Series at AustrAsia Cultural Centre is a 9-week program for beginner- to intermediate-level participants, especially those who want a more structured understanding of Oriental Ink Art.
Over nine weeks, participants will begin with the cultural foundations of ink art, traditional materials, and essential brush-and-ink techniques. The learning journey then moves into the cultural symbolism and artistic expression of the Four Gentlemen, before expanding into traditional landscape, flower and bird subjects. The series also introduces the idea of Seeing Within Through Art, encouraging participants to reflect on the relationship between artistic practice, observation and inner awareness.
A 9-Week Journey
The Oriental Ink Art Learning Series is designed as a 9-week artistic and cultural learning journey.
Rather than experiencing ink art through isolated, one-off workshops, participants are encouraged to learn progressively over time, building familiarity with brush and ink while developing a deeper appreciation of the cultural and artistic traditions behind the practice.
Stage One: Discovering Ink Art and the Four Treasures of the Study
Participants begin by exploring the foundations of Oriental Ink Art and becoming familiar with the Four Treasures of the Study.
Stage Two: The Four Gentlemen
Participants explore the classical subjects of plum blossom, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum, discovering their cultural symbolism, artistic character and expressive qualities.
Stage Three: Landscapes, Flowers and Birds
The learning journey expands into traditional landscape, flower and bird subjects, introducing richer ideas of composition, space, rhythm, atmosphere and the expressive interpretation of nature.
Stage Four: Seeing Within Through Art
The series brings cultural understanding, artistic practice and personal experience together through a reflective exploration of art, observation and awareness.
This structure provides a clear learning progression while allowing the teaching artist the flexibility to adapt subjects, depth, and pace to participants’ experience, progress, and learning needs.
